What is a VAT Calculator?

A VAT calculator moves a price between its two forms. In one direction it adds tax to a net amount to produce the gross price a customer pays. In the other β€” the direction people find harder β€” it extracts the tax already baked into a VAT-inclusive total. Since Saudi retail prices are displayed inclusive of VAT, the second calculation is the one you need whenever you are reconciling a receipt, an expense claim or a supplier invoice.

Saudi Arabia's 15% VAT: What You Need to Know

VAT was introduced in Saudi Arabia in January 2018 at 5% and increased to 15% in July 2020. It is administered by ZATCA, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority. Registered businesses charge VAT on taxable supplies, reclaim the VAT they pay on inputs, and remit the difference. Consumers simply see one inclusive price.

  • Add 15% VAT: multiply the net amount by 1.15
  • Remove 15% VAT: divide the gross amount by 1.15
  • Extract the VAT portion: multiply the gross amount by 15 Γ· 115
  • Registration is mandatory above SAR 375,000 in annual taxable supplies
  • Voluntary registration is available above SAR 187,500
  • Displayed consumer prices must be VAT-inclusive

How to Add or Remove VAT Step by Step

  1. Pick a mode: add VAT if your price excludes tax, remove VAT if it already includes it.
  2. Enter the amount.
  3. Choose a country preset, or type a custom rate.
  4. Set a quantity if you are pricing more than one unit.
  5. Read the net amount, the VAT and the gross total.

The VAT Fraction

The most common VAT mistake is taking 15% of a VAT-inclusive price. That overstates the tax, because the 15% was calculated on the smaller net figure. The correct shortcut is the VAT fraction:

VAT in a gross price = Gross Γ— (Rate Γ· (100 + Rate))

For 15% that is 15/115, or about 13.043%. So SAR 1,150 inclusive contains SAR 150 of VAT, not SAR 172.50. The equivalent fractions are 5/105 for a 5% rate and 20/120 for 20%.

Standard VAT Rates by Country

  • Gulf: Saudi Arabia 15%, Bahrain 10%, UAE 5%, Oman 5%. Qatar and Kuwait have not yet implemented VAT.
  • Middle East & North Africa: Jordan 16%, Egypt 14%, Morocco 20%.
  • Europe: United Kingdom 20%, Germany 19%, France 20%, Spain 21%.
  • Asia: India charges GST, commonly at 18%; Pakistan applies sales tax at 18%.

Every one of these systems also has reduced rates, zero-rated categories and exemptions. Exports are typically zero-rated, while some financial services and residential rents are exempt β€” and the difference matters, because zero-rated suppliers can still reclaim input VAT while exempt ones cannot.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is the VAT rate in Saudi Arabia?

The standard VAT rate in Saudi Arabia is 15%. It was introduced at 5% in January 2018 and increased to 15% in July 2020.

How do I add 15% VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1.15. For example, SAR 1,000 net becomes SAR 1,150 including VAT, of which SAR 150 is VAT.

How do I remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price?

Divide the gross amount by 1.15 to get the net price. The VAT portion is the gross price multiplied by 15 Γ· 115, which is about 13.043%.

What is the VAT fraction?

The VAT fraction extracts VAT from a gross price. For a 15% rate it is 15/115, for 5% it is 5/105, and for 20% it is 20/120.

Which other countries are included?

The calculator has presets for the UAE (5%), Bahrain (10%), Oman (5%), Egypt (14%), Jordan (16%), the UK (20%), Germany (19%), France (20%), Spain (21%), Turkey (20%), South Africa (15%), India GST (18%) and Pakistan (18%), plus a custom rate.

Are Saudi retail prices VAT-inclusive?

Are all goods and services taxed at 15%?

No. Some supplies are zero-rated (such as exports and certain medicines) and others are exempt (such as some financial services and residential rents). Check ZATCA guidance for your specific case.

Can I calculate VAT for several units at once?

Yes. Enter a quantity and the calculator shows the VAT and totals for the whole order along with the per-unit net and gross values.

Do I need to register for VAT in Saudi Arabia?

Registration is mandatory for businesses with annual taxable supplies above SAR 375,000, and voluntary above SAR 187,500. Thresholds can change, so confirm with ZATCA.

Is my data stored?
