What Does Merging a PDF Do?

Merging takes several separate PDF documents and produces one document containing all of their pages, end to end, in the order you set. Nothing is re-rendered or re-compressed: every page arrives in the combined file with the same fonts, images and layout it had in the original, so the result is visually identical to the sources and stays roughly the same total size.

That matters more than it sounds. Many online tools rasterise pages — turning crisp, selectable text into a flat picture of text. A merge that copies the underlying page objects keeps your text searchable, your links clickable and your file size sane.

How to Merge PDF Files

1. Drag your PDFs onto the drop zone, or click Choose PDF files.
2. Check the order in the list — the number beside each file is where its pages will land.
3. Use the ↑ and ↓ arrows to rearrange, or ✕ to drop a file from the batch.
4. Give the output a name, or keep the default merged.pdf.
5. Click Merge. The combined PDF downloads automatically.

You can merge up to 20 files at a time, each up to 50 MB. Adding the same file twice is allowed — handy when you need a cover sheet or a terms page to appear more than once.

What Carries Over, and What Does Not

• Kept: page content, embedded fonts, images, vector graphics and page size
• Kept: selectable, searchable text — pages are never flattened to images
• Kept: page annotations that live on the pages themselves
• Not rebuilt: bookmarks and the document outline
• Not rebuilt: interactive form fields and their values
• Not supported: encrypted or password-protected files, which are rejected outright

Privacy: Where Your Files Go

Combining PDFs means reading each document's internal object structure, so this tool does the work on our servers rather than in your browser. Files travel over HTTPS, are processed, and the merged result comes straight back to you. They are never sold, shared with third parties or used for advertising.

That said, uploading is uploading. If a document contains material you are not permitted to transmit — medical records, unreleased financials, client data under NDA — use a desktop tool instead. We would rather tell you that plainly than claim a privacy guarantee this design cannot make.

Merge vs. Split

Merging is the inverse of splitting. If you need to pull pages back out of a combined document — a single page, a chapter, or equal chunks — use the Split PDF tool. The two are designed to round-trip: pages split out of a document can be merged back together without any loss.

Tips for a Clean Merge

• Name files with a leading number (01-cover.pdf, 02-report.pdf) so they sort predictably before you upload.
• Check the order in the list before merging — reordering afterwards means merging again.
• Remove passwords first; encrypted files are rejected rather than silently skipped.
• Merge in batches for very large sets, then merge the batches together.
• Mixed page sizes are fine — A4 and Letter pages can coexist in one document.
