What is BMR?

Basal metabolic rate is the energy your body uses just to stay alive: breathing, circulating blood, maintaining temperature, repairing cells and running your brain. It is measured at complete rest, in a neutral environment, after fasting — so it excludes every calorie burned by movement, digestion or exercise. For most people BMR is 60–70% of total daily energy expenditure, which makes it the largest single component of what you burn.

What Actually Determines Your BMR
