What is an Income Tax Calculator?

An income tax calculator applies a country's tax bands to your income and tells you what you owe, what you keep, and how those two numbers relate. Because almost every system is progressive, the answer is never a single multiplication: your income is sliced into bands and each slice is taxed at its own rate. This calculator shows every slice, so you can see exactly where your tax comes from rather than trusting one final figure.

How Progressive Tax Actually Works

Moving into a higher bracket does not re-tax your whole income at the new rate — a misconception that leads people to turn down raises. Only the income above the threshold is taxed at the higher rate. That is why your effective rate (total tax ÷ total income) is always lower than your marginal rate (the rate on your next unit of income).

  • Bracket-by-bracket table showing the tax from each band
  • Effective and marginal tax rates side by side
  • Standard deductions and personal allowances applied automatically
  • India's Section 87A rebate and 4% cess handled for you
  • The UK personal allowance taper above £100,000
  • Custom brackets so you can model any tax system

How to Estimate Your Income Tax

  1. Select your country and tax year.
  2. Enter your gross annual income.
  3. Add any extra deductions such as pension contributions or donations.
  4. Read your total tax, take-home pay and effective rate.
  5. Check the bracket table to see how much tax each band contributes.

Allowances, Deductions, Credits and Rebates

These four words are often used interchangeably, but they reduce tax in different ways — and the calculator models each correctly:

  • Allowance — a slice of income taxed at 0%, such as the UK personal allowance. Worth more to higher earners, which is why the UK withdraws it above £100,000.
  • Deduction — reduces taxable income, so its value depends on your marginal rate. The US and Indian standard deductions work this way.
  • Credit— reduces the tax bill itself at a fixed rate, regardless of your bracket. Canada's basic personal amount is a credit, not a deduction.
  • Rebate— cancels tax entirely below a threshold. India's Section 87A rebate is why taxable income up to ₹12 lakh attracts no tax under the new regime.

What This Calculator Excludes

Being explicit about the gaps matters more than a precise-looking number. The calculator does not include US state or local taxes or FICA payroll taxes, UK National Insurance or Scottish rates, Canadian provincial tax, Australian HELP repayments or the Medicare levy surcharge, Indian surcharges on very high incomes, or any country's targeted credits and reliefs. It also assumes employment income only — capital gains, dividends and rental income are often taxed under separate rules.

Use the result to sanity-check a payslip or compare offers between countries, and use a qualified tax adviser or your national tax authority for anything you intend to file.

Who This Calculator Is For

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Which countries does this calculator cover?

It includes Saudi Arabia and the GCC (no personal income tax), India's new regime for FY 2025-26, the UK for 2025/26, US federal tax for 2025 (single and married filing jointly), Canadian federal tax for 2025, Australian resident rates for 2025-26, and a custom option where you can enter any bracket table.

How does progressive taxation work?

Income is divided into bands and each band is taxed at its own rate. Only the income inside a band is taxed at that band's rate, which is why your average (effective) rate is always lower than your top (marginal) rate.

What is the difference between effective and marginal tax rate?

Your marginal rate is the rate applied to your next unit of income. Your effective rate is total tax divided by total income — the real share of your income that goes to tax.

Is there income tax in Saudi Arabia?

No. Saudi Arabia does not tax personal salary income. Businesses pay corporate income tax or zakat, and employees may pay GOSI social insurance contributions.

How does India's Section 87A rebate work?

Under the new regime for FY 2025-26, a rebate of up to ₹60,000 means taxpayers with taxable income up to ₹12 lakh pay no tax. The calculator applies the rebate and the 4% health and education cess automatically.

Why does my UK personal allowance shrink?

The £12,570 personal allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 of income above £100,000, so it disappears entirely at £125,140. The calculator applies this taper for you.

Does the US calculation include Social Security and Medicare?

No. It covers federal income tax with the standard deduction only. FICA payroll taxes, state and local tax, credits and AMT are not included.

Can I model a country that is not listed?

Yes. Choose Custom brackets and enter your own thresholds and rates. Leave the top bracket's limit blank to mean 'and above'.

How accurate are the results?

They are a good estimate of headline tax on employment income, but real returns involve credits, reliefs, surcharges, allowances and local taxes. Treat the output as a planning figure, not a filing figure.

Is this tax advice?

No. This tool provides general information only. Consult a qualified tax adviser or your national tax authority for advice on your own situation.

Is my income data private?

Yes. All calculations happen inside your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored.
